Summary

The Trailer Technician is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS owned trailers by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to ensure the trailer is safe to be on the road. Functions of this position include: inspecting, diagnosing, replacing and repairing brake systems ABS, electrical components, steering systems, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding / fabrication of steel and aluminum and related equipment.

 

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or a minimum three years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding.
  2. Working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
  3. Working knowledge of trailer maintenance and diagnostic software.
  4. A valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
  5. Must be able to operate all related shop equipment. 
  6. Must be DOT certified and forklift certified. 
  7. Strong communications skills (written, verbal, listening).
  8. A firm understanding of basic computer operations.
  9. Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
  10. Good electrical troubleshooting skills.
  11. Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
  12. Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned trailers using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.
  2. Move tractors and trailers in and out of the shop for maintenance.
  3. Performs repairs following ATS procedures within standard job times to ensure the equipment is available when needed and to get the drivers back on the road as soon as possible.
  4. Inspects and performs basic trailer maintenance including proper condition and tire air pressure, brakes, lights, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.
  5. Performs shop clean-up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.            
  6. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  7. Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  8. Must meet productivity standards.
  9. Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands on training provided by OEM and Factory.
  10. Open repair orders and charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.
  11. Document work order details within the Company’s CMMS program.
  12. Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.
  13. Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
  14. Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
  15. Works within budget that is set for the department.

  17. Required to work occasional overtime, Saturdays and other shift vacancies as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use finger, handle and touch objects and controls, and to reach with hands and arms.  Work in a shop environment with exposure to noise and fumes, and occasionally work outside in cold or hot weather environments. The employee occasionally sits.
