Summary

The Mechanic I – Tractor position is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS tractors by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to make sure the tractor is safe to be on the road.

 

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or five years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding.
  2. Working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
  3. Experience using OEM software and additional software such as: Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Link, Premium Tech Tool, Michell1, Meritor Tool Box, Thermo King for APU, etc. to diagnose and make repairs.
  4. A valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
  5. Brake and 609 air conditioning certifications required.
  6. Must have ASE master certification.
  7. Must be able to operate all related shop equipment. 
  8. Must be DOT certified and forklift certified. 
  9. Strong communications skills (written, verbal, listening),
  10. A firm understanding of basic computer operations.
  11. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
  12. Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  13. Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform inspections on company tractors using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure that the tractors are operating safely.
  2. Complete DOT inspections on outgoing trucks to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.
  3. Performs repairs following ATS procedures within standard job times to get the drivers back on the road as soon as possible.
  4. Performs all necessary/scheduled preventative maintenance services e.g., oil and grease, air filters, cooling system nitrate, water filters, etc.
  5. Diagnose and repair electronic control engines.
  6. Train and be a resource to others (technicians, drivers, managers, etc.).
  7. Work with the Safety Department to make sure all communications units are hooked up properly and provide the data necessary for electronic logging.
  8. Performs a series of diagnostic checks to confirm units are installed properly and feeding the necessary data to support electronic logging.
  9. Wear all required PPE at all times.
  10. Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  11. Must meet productivity standards.
  12. Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands on training provided by OEM and Factory.
  13. Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.
  14. Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
  15. Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
  16. Works within budget that is set for the department.
  17. Charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.

  19. Required to work occasional overtime, Saturdays and other shift vacancies as needed.
  20. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use finger, handle and touch objects and controls, and to reach with hands and arms.  Work in a shop environment with exposure to noise and fumes, and occasionally work outside in cold or hot weather environments. The employee occasionally sits.
