Summary

The Tractor Maintenance Service leader is responsible to coordinate the daily maintenance and repair tractor operations performed by scheduling, supervising shop employees, and by ordering and organizing parts, supplies, records, and files to provide safe, efficient, and quality service to all customers.  This position will interact with drivers, operations, and vendors.

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/or maintenance related program and/or 1-3 years of equivalent experience in related field e.g. automotive, medium/heavy equipment, tractor repair, etc.
  2. 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience in a maintenance shop environment.
  3. Experience using OEM software and additional software such as: Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Link, Premium Tech Tool, Mitchell1, Meritor Tool Box, Thermo King for APU, etc. to diagnose and make repairs.
  4. Must have a solid understanding of parts and inventory control usually gained through 1-2 years of training and/or related experience.
  5. DOT and forklift certified preferred.
  6. Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) including working knowledge of a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
  7. Must be able to operate related power/shop equipment.
  8. Must be flexible to work varying hours including weekends depending on department needs.
  9. Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
  10. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates and directs all activities associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of assigned equipment/vehicles by scheduling and monitoring technicians to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  2. Reviews work performed by staff and assists in repairs through coaching and training technicians on proper repair procedures.
  3. Understands, trains and enforces the use of ATS standard repair guidelines for consistency and safety practices.
  4. Monitors preventative maintenance service and repairs on all assets to ensure it is in safe working condition and in DOT compliance.
  5. Creates work orders and write quotes for lease drivers.
  6. Monitors work in progress and upon completion ensuring work meets required company and DOT maintenance standards.
  7. Verifies that all parts required for the repair have been added to the work orders for correct billing.
  8. Communicates with drivers and/or operations staff regarding the status of vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair jobs.
  9. Issues parts requested by mechanics and enter information into computer system.
  10. May need to cover other shifts and service as a back-up during periods of absences

  12. Position may require work responsibilities outside of normal business hours and infrequent travel may be required.

Frequently moving about to obtain tools, supplies, parts and to inspect equipment.

Occasionally uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position or enter data into computer.

Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. occasionally
  • From 11 to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Over 50 lbs. occasionally

Exposure to:

  1. Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
  4. Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.

Supervisory Responsibility

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with ATS’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

This position will spend a majority of the time on the shop floor helping the technicians to achieve their maximum potential; driving efficiency, quality and safety.
