Summary

The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing and replacing any and all components (brake systems, air systems, electrical components, hydraulic and steering systems) on the various types of ATS owned trailers (Multi axle, Heavy Haul, Schnabel's and trailers that haul windmill blades). Work is completed using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to ensure equipment is safe to be on the road.

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or a minimum five years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding.
  2. Strong working skill in welding and fabrication of steel and aluminum.
  3. Minimum 2 years' experience working on Heavy haul/Schnabel's/blade trailers.
  4. Working knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
  5. Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  6. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
  7. Working knowledge of trailer maintenance and diagnostic software.
  8. A valid driver's license, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
  9. Must be able to operate all related shop equipment. 
  10. Must be DOT certified and forklift certified. 
  11. Strong communications skills (written, verbal, listening),
  12. A firm understanding of basic computer operations.
  13. Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
  14. Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned trailers using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.
  2. Move tractors and trailers in and out of the shop for maintenance.
  3. Performs repairs following ATS procedures within standard job times to ensure the equipment is available when needed and to get the drivers back on the road as soon as possible.
  4. Inspects, troubleshoots and performs all minor and major trailer maintenance including, tire replacement, pressure checks, brakes, lights, hydraulics, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.
  5. Fabricates and welds parts that need repair or replacing.
  6. Performs shop clean-up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.            
  7. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  8. Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  9. Must meet productivity standards.
  10. Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands on training provided by OEM and Factory.
  11. Open repair orders and charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.
  12. Remain technically proficient in all areas of the shop including trailer, tire, and basic parts.
  13. Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems, determine most effective and efficient method for repair.
  14. Document work order details within the Company's CMMS program.
  15. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.
  16. Be a positive role model for all team members providing support and enthusiasm – creating a professional, positive work environment.
  17. Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.
  18. Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
  19. Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
  20. Works within budget that is set for the department.

Constantly positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to work on equipment.

Frequently moving about to obtain tools, supplies, parts and to inspect equipment.

Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position or enter data into computer.

Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair.

Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.

Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
  • From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently
  • From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Over 50 lbs. occasionally

Exposure to:

  1. Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
  4. Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.
