Summary

The Body Shop Technician position is responsible for performing skilled body work on heavy-duty tractor and trailer equipment by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to ensure the tractor and trailer is safe to be on the road.

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or at least one year of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, repair/refinish of trucks and trailers, etc.
  2. Working knowledge of and demonstrated ability in tools of trade (including cutting and welding equipment, paint equipment, shop machines, and power tools) required.
  3. Knowledge of the manufacturer’s concepts and practices for the heavy trucking industry.
  4. Working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
  5. Must be able to operate all related shop equipment. 
  6. DOT certified and forklift certified preferred.
  7. Good  communications skills (written, verbal, listening),
  8. A firm understanding of basic computer operations.
  9. Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
  10. Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
  11. Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
  12. Working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  13. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform skilled body work on heavy-duty truck equipment and related components with minimum supervision.
  2. Review each repair order, work order, and estimator's notes to understand repairs needed prior to beginning work on the tractor or trailer.
  3. All repairs must be completed according to the documentation on the repair order or the supplement.
  4. Identify parts for cut-in and edging and blending panel repairs and painting.
  5. Perform all repair procedures according to factory specifications and company policy.
  6. Re-assemble painted vehicle and painted parts.
  7. Perform trouble shooting on major problems.
  8. Maintains a neat and orderly working area and properly handle company tools.
  9. Advise the Maintenance Service Leader if additional repair work is necessary.
  10. Identify components that need new parts or need to be replaced and place orders as necessary.
  11. Perform repairs with fiberglass, composite and bonding materials/ plastic EPW.
  12. Performs repairs following ATS procedures within standard job times to get the drivers back on the road as soon as possible.
  13. Wear all required PPE at all times.
  14. Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  15. Must meet productivity standards.
  16. Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands on training provided by OEM and Factory.
  17. Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.
  18. Maintains favorable relationships with customers.
  19. Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
  20. Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
  21. Work within budget that is set for the department.
  22. Charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.

  24. Required to work occasional overtime, Saturdays and other shift vacancies as needed.
  25. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Constantly positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to work on equipment.

Frequently moving about to obtain tools, supplies, parts and to inspect equipment.

Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position or enter data into computer.

Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair.

Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.

Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
  • From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently
  • From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Over 50 lbs. occasionally

Exposure to:

  1. Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
  4. Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.
